Robinson Crusoe finds himself in the middle class which his father had strongly recommended to him, but he doesn’t feel content with this class. Therefore, he wants to improve his middle position by his own unhindered effort and by his spirit of enterprise and initiative. Crusoe wants to pursue money very methodically. He has this technique in his blood, so he decides to leave his father’s house for money which can helps him in improving his position. Leaving home and trying to raise oneself economically is a vital feature of the individualistic pattern of life. It is this fundamental tendency of Economic individualism that prevents Crusoe from paying much heed to ties of family. Nor does Crusoe at any time show any particular attachment of a sentimental kind to his country because the Economic motive involves a reduction in the importance of other modes of thought, feeling and action. He doesn’t mind going to the remotest part of the world in quest of profit. Another side of the Economic motive in Robinson Crusoe is in his relationships with others of human beings. The clearest case is Xury, Moorish boy, who helped Crusoe to escape from slavery and offered to sacrifice his life for Crusoe’s sake but Crusoe sells him to Portuguese sea-captain for a small amount of money .Also Crusoe’s relations with his man Friday which shows his selfishness and doesn’t have any real understanding of the human instinct for friendship and an emotional attachment to persons. The Economic theme of Crusoe’s life on his island is that labor and invention create useful things and that the value of things depends on their usefulness. According to his view, it is a sin to keep things which one cannot use. Crusoe thinks that there would be no point in his producing more than is really necessary for his own needs. He can raise enough crops to feed a whole army, and he has enough timber to build a whole fleet of ships, but it would be futile for him to produce more or build more than would be necessary to supply his own wants. Another example of his Economic role is when he found some of money in the ship. Although money is at the moment useless to him, yet he puts it in his safe keeping. المصدر: منتديات روعة الخليج Robinson Crusoe as an Economic man |
